Do not get disappointed too quickly when you receive a Visa gift card instead of cash. Did you know that you can have your Visa gift card sold and get some money out of it?
Each Visa gift card has its respective balance you can use to buy stuff, but we know that gift cards can be limited in terms of the items we can purchase using it. Sometimes, we wish we got cash that we can use on anything instead of gift cards.
Whether you got it as a gift or purchased one that’s on promo, make sure you can use whatever balance you have on the card.
10 Proven Ways: How to Get Cash From a Visa Gift Card
1. Sell to an online marketplace
Post your offer to any online marketplace that you trust and meet with the buyer face-to-face. Both of you can decide on any payment method that’s convenient for you and your buyer. You can go with cash, Venmo, CashApp, or Apple Pay.
However, there’s a downside to selling your card this way. Sometimes, the buyer would try to negotiate with the seller to lessen the price posted. You might earn less than what you could get from selling it to a website. But don’t worry, it does not happen all the time. Or you could simply include in the caption that the offer is non-negotiable.
Some sites that offer this kind of selling arrangement include Craigslist and eBay. Watch out for your security because of fraudulent sites online. Think twice once you encounter an offer that is too good to be true because they are probably scams.

2. Trade it!
Another way of making the most out of your Visa gift card is by directly trading it! Just go to a nearby Gift Card Exchange Kiosk. You can usually find them in supermarkets, shopping malls, and check-cashing stores.
Input all the information about the gift card. The most important one is the set of numbers found just at the front-most part of your card. The kiosk machine will notify you how much it is willing to offer for the exchange. Although you will be receiving an amount that is less than what the gift card is worth, these kiosks allow you to get your money in the fastest way possible.
Once you accept the offer, the kiosk will then issue a voucher. Go directly to the cashier and get your cash!
3. Buy an item and sell
You may also choose to buy an item using your gift card and subsequently sell that item at a higher price. This method is an opportunity for you to get cash that is more than what you can acquire from your gift card.
Go to Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or Craigslist to sell your item. Video games, sports equipment, and sneakers are some of the in-demand products that can sell.
Remember to set a reasonable selling price on your item if you want it to be sold immediately.
4. Convert it into cash via PayPal
You can do three options when you choose to convert your gift card balance into cash through a PayPal wallet.
- Deposit the amount from your PayPal wallet directly to the bank account connected to your PayPal. This method allows you to either make any purchase, pay a debt, or do anything you like to do with cash.
- Cash in your balance to someone else’s PayPal account. You can do this if you don’t have one or if you have to pay your debt to someone who has a Paypal account.
- Purchase through PayPal. The gift card balance that you transferred to your PayPal wallet may be treated like cash, credit card, or debit card in the sense that you can use it to purchase things from stores that accept PayPal.
When you do either of the first two options, keep in mind that you might be charged 3% of the amount you will transfer.
Steps to get money off of a Visa gift card
- Log in to your PayPal account
- Click on the “Wallet” option at the top-most part of the page
- Select “Link a card or bank” at the top-left of the page. You will find that under any existing cards or banks you have linked. Continue clicking on the prompts.
- PayPal will ask you to fill out relevant information about your Visa gift card. Make sure to input all details asked from you.
- Click on “Link Card.”
Don’t worry if you encounter any errors in following these steps. Call the Visa card issuer and have your card registered to link an address to your card.
5. Sell it to a gift card website
One of the easiest ways to get money out of your Visa gift cards is to sell them to a website. Many gift card websites pay cash in exchange for your gift cards.
For example, you can sell a Visa gift card with a balance of $100 for $92 with a 10% fee. Compared to other methods of converting gift card into cash, this one is more likely to ask for fees. However, it can be a good option if you’re in a rush!
Some of these websites are CardCash and Gift Card Granny. Each of these sites has specific features; it is best to do some research on their offers to determine which among them will give you the best deal. You will be charged a minimal amount, which is a percentage of the balance of the card. Make sure that you know how much this is before making a deal.
6. Sell through an app
When everything else fails, convert your Visa gift cards into cash by selling them through an app. There are many apps that buy Visa gift cards for the purpose of reselling them. However, this option should only be your last resort because it is very costly. The apps charge a commission up to 15% of the gift card balance.
Take for example, Raise has an app that is compatible for both Android and iOS users but it takes a commission of 15% for buying and reselling gift cards.
Prepaid2Cash also offers the same services to both iOS and Android users but it has devised a way to make the transaction faster. First, you have to identify what type of gift card you have (Visa). Second, they will instantly offer you an amount based on the type of card you have. Third, you can either accept or refuse the offer.
Keep in mind that once you have accepted their offer, there’s no turning back. They will deposit the offer you accepted into your bank account and expect to receive it within five (5) business days.
Prepaid2Cash is not as transparent as others because you won’t know how much fee they are charging you. All fees are incorporated into the offer. They will just state that they will pay as much as 92% of the gift card balance. In that case, the fee is at around 8%.
7. Pay your bills with Visa gift card
Treat your Visa gift cards as you would use your credit cards. Although you won’t see the actual cash, you get to spend the card balance just like how you would spend your credit cards within their designated limits.
There are many establishments like grocery stores that would accept your gift card as payment for your purchases. However, just like credit cards, you may be charged with some fees. Make sure that before you pay your bills, you know what fees they are charging you for and how much they cost.
Remember that not every single company accepts Visa gift cards for bill payment. You may only liquidate a Visa gift card by paying bills if the billing provider accepts Visa credit cards for bill payment. Buying groceries, renewing your subscription at a gym, or even topping up your phone credit are some of the most common things you can pay for using your Visa gift card.
8. Put Visa Gift Card card balance to your Venmo account
When you do not have a PayPal account, put your Visa card balance to your Venmo account instead. This is better than PayPal because it charges no transfer fee unless you select the “Instant Transfer” option.
You will just have to wait for one (1) to three (3) business days before the amount will reflect on your Venmo account. That waiting time is not bad because you will get to realize the maximum value of your Visa gift card in the end.
It’s straightforward to use Venmo. Go to the Venmo app, and you will find “Add gift cards”. Select that option, and you are good to go. When you encounter any problem such as fraud, the Venmo app will let you know that immediately by sending you a warning message. You may try again or give Venmo customer service a call for troubleshooting assistance.
9. Buy other gift card
It’s also possible to just use your Visa gift card to purchase other seller’s gift cards that you are more likely to use and enjoy.
For example, you want to buy some products from a store that does not accept Visa gift card as payment, what you can just do is use your Visa gift card to buy another gift card from the same store. Use the card that you bought to purchase your desired item. That way, you can put into good use your Visa gift card.
There are times that some online stores offer up to 20% off your Visa gift card. This means that you are getting an extra 20% of your card’s balance when you make the purchase.
These stores can be big companies like Walmart, Amazon, and Starbucks. In some cases, you have the option to convert your Visa gift card into something that could help you save some cash by simply trading it with one hot tall caramel macchiato.
10. Give them out as gifts
There is no easier way to convert a Visa gift card into cash than by treating it as one! It is money in a card and therefore, you can just choose to give it away as gifts to people that might be able to put it to better use.
Other Things You Need to Know
Can you put a Visa gift card in your bank account?
Yes, you can do so but not directly.
Visa gift cards are somehow treated like Visa credit cards, which means that the balance isn’t transferable to other accounts. However, there are some roundabout ways to achieve this, like transferring the balance to your PayPal or Venmo account first.
Can you turn a Visa gift card into cash in hand?
Some of these options are better than others at turning a Visa gift card into cash in hand. This will only be the outcome when you’re trading your gift card in-person, such as when selling it to someone or converting a Gift Card Kiosk voucher into money.
However, having the money added to your PayPal or bank account is as close to cash in hand as you can get. Simply add the extra step of going to withdraw it, and you’re on your way.
There are many ways to convert your Visa gift card into cash, as discussed in this article. Select the method which will best satisfy your needs and circumstances. Be mindful of the compensation that the website is going to charge you. In that way, you can better assess the potential profit from selling or trading gift cards like Visa gift cards.
If these ways fail, you may just opt to buy rare products (that you cannot usually buy) using your Visa gift card, rather than just let it expire and go to waste. Who knows, someone might be interested in buying a rare item in the future.
